Past Bike Tours

Over the past few years, I have enjoyed a few extraordinary bike tours. If you would like to read about these trips, check out the links below!

May-July 2003, The Transamerica Trail

Between May and July of 2003, my father and I biked from Virginia to Oregon. The trip lasted 70 days, covered almost 4,500 miles, and was, well, a good way to get to know pops well.

The actual purpose of this trip was to record birds, as my father studies bird song (check out his book). This involved many early mornings to listen to singing birds, but did result in him getting a spot on NPR (I was, however, not mentioned...). Also, you can even watch a movie I made of the trip.

June 2002, Midnight Sun in Alaska

In June of 2002, three friends and I took our mountain bikes and rode 700 miles through some (of the only) roads in Alaska. During the month of June in Alaska, the sun barely dips below the horizon, keeping it light all night. We would frequently ride past midnight on the open roads.

Highlights from this trip include biking through Denali National Park in the middle of the night, riding a 130 mile dirt road that connected nowhere to another uninhabited place, and the general 'party time' atmosphere of the far north.

May 2001, The Epic: A Ride to Vegas

This trip, dubbed 'the epic' by the eight of us who 'attempted it,' took us through some of the most spectacular terrain in California and Nevada. Taking 6 days, we biked into the mountains, hiked across the sierras while a car drove the bikes, and then biked through the desert, including Death Valley, to Las Vegas.

September 1999: The Pacific Coast

My first bike tour was a 900 mile ride from Portland to Stanford at the end of the summer in1999. My friend Tom and I, who were unsure if bike touring was really possible, decided to give it a try and ride our bikes to school. Yes, it is possible, we decided. And quite fun.
